Gentle in appearance but ruthless in remarks, he’s Dale “grillscout” Babey, Peach player extraordinaire. A prominent member of not only both the Smash and Rutgers Esports communities, Dale has also been a key figure in the Content Creation committee with his stunning graphic designs and natural knack for ideas. In addition to this, Dale served as the Director of Social Media for Rutgers Esports and always made sure you guys were the first to know of our events and our fresh memes.
Dale’s devotion to esports is beautifully exemplified by his appearance on Barstool Rutgers where he was found practicing combos while working out. (https://www.instagram.com/p/BtudVvblWr6/)
While he may often have been seen glued to his switch playing Smash Ultimate or his phone scrolling through Twitter, Dale was always a friendly face to see and plenty helpful in resolving any confusion anyone had in regards to club information or general esports knowledge. This also entails him politely declining the 10 weekly questions we got from people wanting to see if we could sponsor them for whatever tournament they were playing in (thank you for your top 5 plays but once again, you have to be a student at Rutgers!)
With a double major in Psychology and Economics, Dale hopes to one day work in the Esports industry with a particular focus on content marketing, wanting to help grow the scene he loves so much. We’re sad to see you leave Dale, but we know that you’ll achieve great things and we wish you the absolute best!
When did you get involved with our community?
I started going to smash club my sophomore/junior year but never really did anything in any of the other clubs. At the Scarlet Classic IV, they needed volunteer TO’s for Melee. After the event, I asked [Alice Balashova] if I could join and then pretty much like 2 days later I was in Content Creation lmao.
What degree are you graduating with?
I’m graduating with a double major in Psych and Economics.
What did you do in your time with us?
I started out as a graphic designer in content and then became director of social media (somehow??)
What drew you to Smash as an esport? What other games do you enjoy?
Smash was always a big part of my childhood, and Andrew Har told me about competitive Melee back in Freshman year and I started doing that ever since. I eventually moved onto Ultimate, but Melee is still my main game to be honest. I like other games like Overwatch, Final Fantasy XIV, a lot of RPGs, most Nintendo games and I’m into mobile game trash.
What are your plans after you graduate?
I’m hoping to find a place in the esports field, specifically under graphic design and/or social media. I’d love to get into advertising for esports.
What has been the most rewarding part of being Social Media Director?
Interacting with everybody on social media and being able to share memes to thousands of people has definitely felt rewarding for me. My time as Social Media Director was the most stressful and most fun time of my life.
What’s your fondest memory of your time at Esports?
My fondest memory in the org is probably at the Scarlet Classic V. When it was about 4-5 hours in and there were hundreds of people in the venue, I stood up top looking down at everything and everyone in disbelief and awe and just being super proud of the event we thought we’d never be able to pull off.
Which Smash character do you associate the most with?
The character I most associate with is probably Isabelle because she’s such a hard working gal and never gets any sleep and never gives up, but she’s also the most adorable thing in the world and is precious and we should protect her at all costs!
